Spain Vs. Honduras, 2012 Olympics: Final Score 1-0 Honduras; Spain Eliminated
Just like against Japan, Spain went down in the first half thanks to a cross. Spain failed to clear their lines, and a left-sided delivery allowed New England Revolution centre forward Jerry Bengston to nod past David de Gea in the 7th minute. It was a wakeup call that Spain complete failed to heed -- they continued to be dominated in the centre by Honduras's players -- and although they eventually did put some pressure on Jose Mendoza's goal, some good saves and good luck prevented them from finding the back of the net.
The second half was marked by some hilarious timewasting on Honduras’s part, which annoyed Spain to the point that some players lost their cool. Athletic Bilbao’s Iker Muniain almost resorted to blows after taking offence to Mendoza lying on the ground with a pretend injury (there were lots of these), but the passion the Spanish were clearly feeling didn’t translate to results. They’ll be going home after Wednesday’s matches.
