Former Bayern Munich defender Breno has been sentence to almost four years in prison for arson after burning his home down last September. There were no injuries caused and Breno has never admitted guilt, but the fire caused significant damage to the €1.5M luxury villa and a Munich court found him guilty of the offence on Wednesday.

Breno made 21 appearances in four years at Bayern after a move from Sao Paulo in 2007, and although he was a highly regarded prospect, his various injury issues slowed him down significantly and erratic behaviour on the pitch, including repeated altercations with opposition players, raised some eyebrows. Although Bayern initially sought help for the defender following his arrest for arson, they allowed his contract to expire at the end of June, and it looks as though a very promising career - he was chased by the likes of Juventus, AC Milan and Real Madrid before Bayern secured him - has now been cut totally short.
