Impact Closing In On Non-DP Deal For Italian Star Alessandro Nesta

Impact say Alessandro Nesta has verbally agreed to an 18-month contract that will pay him less than a Designated Player’s wage.

It would appear that the only thing separating Alessandro Nesta from the Montreal Impact is an official announcement. The team confirmed that they have reached a verbal agreement on an 18-month deal for the Italian center back and suggested that the signing could be announced very soon, according to a report on MLSsoccer.com. What's perhaps even more remarkable is that the Impact have apparently been able to sign him at something less than a Designated Player rate.

“Before he left, on Thursday night, he told us he was very much intent on furthering the talks with us,” De Santis told reporters. “We then decided to leave for Miami on Saturday and meet him again. It took a few hours before we could say there was a deal.”

Nesta would be the fifth player on the Impact roster who had spent time in Italy’s Serie A. Nesta, 36, has spent his entire 20-year career playing in Italy, most recently with AC Milan. He also has 78 caps with the Italian national team, although none sine 2006.

Nesta is already training with the Impact and could be eligible to play as early as this weekend. He’ll be joining a defense that is badly in need of some help, as the Impact have allowed a MLS-worst 35 goals.
