Sunderland have completed the signing of 34-year-old striker Louis Saha on a free transfer, the club have confirmed.

The former Manchester United, Everton, Fulham, Newcastle and Tottenham man has signed a one-year deal at the Stadium of Light as Martin O'Neill looks to strengthen his attack for the new season.

In a statement on Sunderland’s official website, the Black Cats boss said: “Louis is a striker whose abilities have been proven at the very highest level and he brings with him a raft of experience of top-flight football.

“I’m sure he will be a great addition to our squad in an area we recognise needs strengthening and I’m delighted we have been able to complete the deal ahead of our first game of the season.”

Saha’s most recent spell was for Tottenham at White Hart Lane, signing on deadline day of the January transfer window last season, where he scored 3 goals in 12 games for the North Londoners.

SB Nation Sunderland blog Roker Report examined whether it was worth taking a risk on the notoriously injury-prone striker. Read it here.
