Caleb Porter is close to taking the Portland Timbers head coaching job, according to a report in The Oregonian. The Timbers have been looking for a new coach ever since John Spencer was fired on July 9, with General Manager Gavin Wilkinson assuming the role of interim coach.
Caleb Porter Reportedly Close To Taking Portland Timbers Job
Akron coach Caleb Porter has reportedly been offered the head coaching job in Portland.
Although Porter has been one of the hot coaching commodities for several seasons after helping bring Akron’s college program to prominence, he does not have any pro coaching experience. The hiring of Porter would mean that each of the Timbers’ first three head coaches took over the job without previously having been MLS head coaches.
Despite the lack of pro coaching experience, Porter has coached plenty of future professionals. Among the players he coached at Akron is current Timbers player Darlington Nagbe. Some of his other former pupils include Sporting Kansas City's Teal Bunbury, the Seattle Sounders' Steve Zakuani and D.C. United's Perry Kitchen.
Porter was previously offered the United coaching job after nearly leading Akron to a perfect season in 2009, but signed an extension that supposedly locked him up through 2020 and pays him about $350,000 a year. He led the Zips to a national title in 2010 and to a No. 1 ranking in 2011. He also coached the United States U-23 team, which failed to qualify for this summer’s Olympics.
