Columbus Crew rookie Kirk Urso died on Saturday. No further details were given about the causes or circumstances of the 22-year-old's death in the statement released by the team on Sunday morning.

“The Columbus Crew has learned that midfielder Kirk Urso has passed away on Saturday night,” the statement read. “While the circumstances of Urso’s passing are still being determined, no further comments will be made at this time.

“The thoughts and prayers of the entire Columbus Crew and Hunt Sports Group are with the Urso family in this time of need. ”

Urso had captained the University of North Carolina to a national championship his senior year and was picked in the first round of the 2012 Supplemental Draft. He had played in six games for the Crew, including five starts at the beginning of the season. A groin injury sidelined him in May, however, and he has not played since.
