Wolfsburg have announced that Patrick Helmes has been diagnosed with a torn ACL and will likely miss the entire first half of the season.
Patrick Helmes Tears ACL
Wolfsburg’s Patrick Helmes has torn his ACL in a preseason friendly against Manchester City.

Helmes, 28, worked his way into Felix Magath's good graces last season by finding the back of the net. The sparsely capped Germany international was Wolfsburg's leading goalscorer last season when the club made a late push but finished just outside of the European places. Magath was determined to keep Helmes at the club this summer and recently named him the team's captain.
“Patrick was going in the right direction and this is very bitter for him and for the whole team,” Magath said. “We will now all support Patrick together so that he can get back onto the field as quickly as possible.”
Magath has brought in enough players that the loss of Helmes can be absorbed. Ivica Olic and Bas Dost have been signed, and Srdan Lakic has returned from his loan spell to Hoffenheim. While Magath doesn’t necessarily favor Lakic, we’ll likely see Dost and Olic competing for the starting minutes now.
