San Jose Earthquakes Win Marcus Tracy Lottery

Despite having the second longest odds of any of the eight teams that entered, the San Jose Earthquakes won the weighted lottery for the MLS rights to Marcus Tracy. The Earthquakes, who currently lead the Supporters’ Shield race, were given a 4.6 percent chance of winning. The odds were based on the most recent 34 games, with worse teams being given a better chance.

The New England Revolution (33.2 percent), FC Dallas (19.7 percent) and Philadelphia Union (16.8 percent) had the three best chances of winning his rights. Real Salt Lake (9.7), Chicago Fire (7.8), New York Red Bulls (6.1) and Seattle Sounders (2.1) also entered the lottery.

The Earthquakes were already one of the deepest teams in MLS at forward, with three players scoring at least eight goals this season, so it’s unlikely that Tracy will figure into their short-term plans. Tracy is also coming off an injury-plagued season with Denmark’s Aalborg BK, so easing into the team might be the best for him.

Long term, Tracy has some significant potential. He was a Hermann Trophy winner in 2008, after his 13-goal, 10-assist junior year at Wake Forest. He followed that up with a 11-goal, nine-assist season that culminated with the Demon Deacons winning the College Cup.

Instead of testing the MLS SuperDraft, where he was expected to be a Top 5 pick, he chose to sign a three-year deal in Europe. While showing some promise there, his time in Denmark was severely curtailed by an injury in 2010-11 that also cost him all of last season.
