Real Madrid signs goalkeeper Diego López

The former Real Madrid goalkeeper returns to the Bernabéu after the news that Iker Casillas will miss 3 months with a broken hand.

Real Madrid today announced they have agreed to a deal with Sevilla for goalkeeper Diego López. The 31-year-old returns to the Bernabéu on a 4-and-a-half year deal. The move comes in the wake of the news that starting goalkeeper Iker Casillas will miss three months due to a broken hand.

López came up through the Madrid youth system playing for both Real Madrid B and C from 2000 to 2005. He joined the senior team in 2005, making two appearance over two seasons, spending most of that time as a backup to Casillas. He left Madrid in 2007 for Villarreal where he became one of the top goalkeepers in La Liga during five seasons with El Submarino Amarillo.

After Villarreal’s relegation, López joined Sevilla in the summer of 2012He has made eight appearances for Los Rojiblancos, battling for time with club captain Andres Palop.

Sevilla confirmed the move on their website today.

López will now compete with Antonio Adan for playing time as Madrid prepares for the Copa del Rey semifinal and a Round of 16 Champions League tilt with Manchester United.
