Following Ivory Coast’s win over Tunisia, Togo grabbed a victory by scoring in the first half, then boring Algeria (and the crowd) to sleep. Then the goal got knocked out of alignment. Then a 104th minute goal happened.

    Algeria go out with a whimper

    Algeria didn’t find a way into Kossi Agassa’s goal in the traditional manner, but that didn’t stop Sofiane Feghouli from snapping the post by running into the back of the net. That led to a lengthy, hilarious delay as players stood around bewildered as the groundsmen first attempted to fix the goal and then were forced into replacing it. Eventually, it was fixed.

    Lots of injury time followed, Togo scored again (Dove Wome raced clear of the defence and tucked a neat finish under Rais M’Bohli); the Fennec Foxes did not, and that left Algeria eliminated from the Africa Cup of Nations. Out, as they say, with a whimper.

    Elephants cruise to easy win

    The Arsenal man won the ball in Tunisia’s penalty area before slipping a quick pass to Traore, whose deft backheel completely wrong-footed the Eagles’ defence and allowed Gervinho a shot from a narrow angle. Cherifa was left helpless as said shot was blasted into the roof of the net for a 1-0 lead.

    The Elephants relaxed a little bit after going ahead, but were clearly the better side. Tunisia came close to chances on the counterattack from time to time, but the final ball was never good enough to trouble Boubacar Barry and it looked as though the Ivory Coast would be able to cruise to a win -- if they could find that key second goal.
