Hosts South Africa have advanced to the quarterfinals of the Africa Cup of Nations. They’re joined by group runners-up Cape Verde, who are in the knockout stage for the first time in their history.

    The massive improvements that Cape Verde have made as a footballing nation in recent years have finally paid off with a berth in the Africa Cup of Nations knockout stages. They put together an absolutely stellar late-game comeback against Angola, scoring twice in the final 10 minutes to notch a 2-1 win and progress in second place in Group A.

    Nando put his team behind in the 33rd minute with an unfortunate own goal that couldn’t be avoided. He slid in to cut out a cross, and the ball took a crazy deflection off his heel before flying into the back of the net.

    Isaam El Adoua got Morocco off to a brilliant start by heading in a corner after just 10 minutes. It took until the 71st minute for South Africa to find an equalizer, but it was well worth the wait. May Mahlangu scored the goal with a brilliant curled shot from just outside the penalty area, assisted by Tukelo Rantie.

    South Africa finish Group A play level with Cape Verde on five points, but win the group by virtue of their superior goal differential.
