Lewis Holtby joins Tottenham Hotspur

The rumours have been spread far and wide, but now Lewis Holtby to Tottenham Hotspur is officially official -- with a new twist. The Schalke midfielder and Germany under-21 international had refused to sign a contract extension with his club, leaving him free to negotiate a contract with other teams in view of a summer move.

Said contract was worked out with Spurs, and we were expecting Holtby to be arriving at White Hart Lane in the offseason, but Daniel Levy and company have thrown the world a curveball by picking him up in January. Tottenham’s official site is confirming that an agreement has been reached with Schalke for the immediate transfer of the 22-year-old, which means they’ll be able to deploy the talented midfielder immediately.

It's a sensible move, even if they had to play Schalke a small transfer fee. The fight for fourth place looks as though it'll be heavily contested, and Holtby provides an immediate injection of quality that should help stave off the likes of Arsenal and Everton for that final Champions League spot.
