Spain seal ticket to 2014 World Cup

Spain saw off a tough challenge from France to win Group I and secured their chance to defend their 2010 World Cup title.

It wasn't as easy as Spain probably would have liked and there were some moments of doubt, but in the end Spain secured an automatic qualifying place in next summer's World Cup in Brazil. They clinched their spot with a 2-0 win over Georgia on Tuesday, which sealed up Group I for the defending world champions.

Thanks to their home victory on Tuesday over Georgia, Spain held on to their three-point advantage of France, leaving their closest rivals in the group with a playoff series to earn their place in Brazil. This will be La Furia Roja's 10th straight appearance in the World Cup, a streak that began in 1978. They'll be attempting to become the first team to repeat as world champions since Brazil won back-to-back World Cups in 1958 and 1962.

Between their loss to Brazil in the 2013 Confederations Cup final and their somewhat lackluster performances in qualifying, there are doubts surrounding Spain and the ability to lift their fourth straight major international trophy.
