While all the madness was going on around them, Honduras was comfortably qualifying for the 2014 World Cup. They just needed a draw or for Mexico to fail to win, as well as for Mexico to not make up the difference between the two teams in goals scored. Los Catrachos drew Jamaica away while Mexico lost to Costa Rica, allowing them to coast into the finals without incident.
Honduras hold off Mexico to clinch 2014 World Cup spot
Honduras got a final day result against Jamaica, even if they didn’t need one, and held on to claim CONCACAF’s final automatic spot for next summer’s World Cup.

After a bright start to the final round of CONCACAF qualifying that included a win over the United States and a draw against Mexico, Honduras had a tough summer, losing two of three matches and facing a trip to the Estadio Azteca. Their 2-1 win over Mexico jump started their campaign as Los Catrachos earned points in the remainder of their matches to keep themselves ahead of Mexico for the final automatic qualification place.
This will be the third trip to a World Cup for Honduras and the first time they've qualified for back-to-back tournaments. They've yet to win a match, though, and have failed to make it out of the group stages in their two previous appearances, in 1982 and 2010.
