Scoring goals is a lot easier when the ball doesn’t actually have to go inside the post, as Bayer Leverkusen learned on Friday. And, unsurprisingly, when scoring goals is easier, winning matches is easier too.

Stefan Kiessling’s header went wide of the post, leading the Bayer striker to rue his missed opportunity and Hoffenheim to walk down the pitch. What they did know is that there was a hole in the side of the net that the ball went through.
And the referee awarded the goal.
Making matters worse, Hoffenheim scored late to cut the 2-0 Bayer lead to 2-1 and Kiessling’s goal that wasn’t proved to be the match-winner.
I was under the impression that goal-line technology would fix all of this. And poverty.
