Gertjan Verbeek to be named new FC Nürnberg manager

The Dutchman has his work cut out for him.

Two weeks after firing manager Michael Wiesinger, it appears that FC Nürnberg are on the verge of naming their next head coach. Reports out of Germany are heavily linking Der Club with Dutchman Gertjan Verbeek and suggest that the signing could be announced as early as Tuesday.

Verbeek, 51, was last in charge of AZ Alkmaar in the Dutch Eredivisie. Last season, they upset PSV Eindhoven in the final of the KNVB Cup. However, after a disappointing 10th place finish last season in the league and a poor start to this season, Alkmaar officials decided that it was time to part with Verbeek.

Nürnberg may be winless after nine games, but they have drawn six of those. Those six points are good enough for 16th place and a spot in the Relegation Playoff position. They were eliminated from the first round of the DFB Pokal by Sandhausen, so things can really only get better from here.

The Dutchman is a “tough” coach and focuses on discipline, fitness, and tactics. In many of their matches thus far, Nürnberg have been forced into scoring late to rescue a point. They’ve started poorly in many of the matches, and a lot of it has appeared to be a lack of focus. If Verbeek can get this team ready and focused from kick off, there will immediately be more points available from the start as they move forward into the season.
