La Liga, Week 10: Barcelona and Atlético Madrid reopen a slight gap at the top
Barcelona won the Clásico over Real Madrid but surprisingly there were nine more matches in Spain this week. Let us explore what happened in those games in our weekly wrap.
There were a lot of blow outs in week ten. Everyone’s definition of a blow out differs of course but for the purpose of this article, we’re going to define a blowout as when a team wins by three or more goals. There were six such gams that qualified under that criteria this week all but one being quite a surprise.
Atlético Madrid kept pace with Barcelona -- they remain one point behind the league leaders -- with a 5-0 win over Real Betis. David Villa had a big day scoring twice for Atléti as he broke out of a slump in form he'd been suffering over the last few weeks. The really cool story from the game was 18-year-old Óliver Torres being handed his first start in a competitive match for Atléti and scoring a goal in the first minute. That's how you start a career at the senior team level.
Real Sociedad's uptick in form continued as they picked up their second straight win, defeating Almeria 3-0. After a rough start to the season that saw La Real win only once in eight games, six quick points have them back in the top half of the table. Espanyol on the other hand were brought back down to earth thanks to a 3-0 thumping at the hands of Levante.
Villarreal recovered from a disappointing loss last week hammering Valencia 4-1 while Celta Vigo shocked Málaga to the tune of 5-0.
