Gus Poyet appointed Sunderland manager

Former Brighton & Hove Albion boss Gus Poyet has been named as Paolo Di Canio’s successor at the Stadium of Light.

Gus Poyet's only previous managerial experience has come at Brighton & Hove Albion in the English second and third tiers, though that hasn't stopped the Uruguayan landing the job at Premier League bottom club Sunderland. The 45-year-old Uruguayan replaces Paolo Di Canio at the Stadium of Light, with the Italian fired late last month after the Black Cats' disastrous start to the season.

Despite bringing in several new faces in the summer, Sunderland's start to the new season under the Italian was appalling. They're still the only team in the division yet to win a match, and are cut six points adrift of safety after just seven games.

Trusting the relatively inexperienced Poyet -- despite his success at Brighton -- with the task of turning things around is certainly a gamble, not forgetting the acrimonious circumstances in which he departed the Amex Stadium. He ended appealing the Seagulls’ board’s decision to fire him, though that proved unsuccessful.
