Lionel Messi sustains left hamstring injury against Real Betis

FC Barcelona could be missing Lionel Messi for a few more games after he picked up yet another hamstring injury. He’ll have tests to determine the severity of the injury on Monday.

FC Barcelona announced Sunday that Lionel Messi injured his left hamstring in their game against Real Betis. Messi came off injured in the 22nd minute after standing still on the pitch for nearly five minutes as a result of the injury picked up in a challenge with two Betis defenders. The club also announced that Messi will undergo further tests on Monday.

Barcelona director of football Andoni Zubizarreta was understandably concerned by Messi picking up yet another injury to the same muscle group, and had to timetable for his return.

Messi has injured both of his hamstrings this season. The left hamstring is the one that he injured in the first leg of the Spanish Super Cup against Atletico Madrid.

The international break comes at a perfect time for Barcelona, but a bad time for Argentina. Thankfully for Messi and his country, they've already qualified for the World Cup. The only effect his injury will have on them is some unhappy fans and sponsors. If Messi simply has a strain or contusion like he had earlier in the season, he should be able to return after the international break, and Monday's tests should reveal if it's anything worse than that.
