The news was announced on Saturday by the German FA, who said the 26-year-old ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee. Khedira suffered the injury after a collision with Andrea Pirlo in the 67th minute of Germany’s 1-1 draw against Italy and immediately went down in obvious pain.

He was taken off the field and straight to a hospital where a series of tests revealed the torn ligament. Khedira will now undergo surgery and will likely miss the remainder of the club season, though he could still return in time for the World Cup.

Germany head coach Joachim Löw expressed his concern and offered support for Khedira on the DFE website,

“That’s a bitter setback for Sami and for all of us.” Löw, who had his 100th game as the German coach, continued to say: “Sami is a fighter, on and off the pitch. He’s always positive, which will help him in his recovery. I believe that he will be ready for the opening game in Brazil. We wish him all the best and we keep our fingers crossed for a successful surgery, so that he can start rehab right away.”

Khedira has made 89 appearances for Real Madrid since joining the club in 2010. He's been a regular starter for Carlo Ancelotti this season starting all but two of the team's league matches and all four Champions League games. He's earned 44 caps with the German national team.
