They’re only friendlies, but things aren’t looking great for Spain, the United States or England at the moment. All three of them lost, and did so off the back of lackluster Friday performances.

Gyorgy Garcis got down the right before hitting a low cross that Brooks should have easily crossed, but the teenager let the ball bounce over his foot and to Janko, who buried his chance to give the home side a lead in the 33rd minute.
Still, the U.S. should have scored before Janko got on the scoreboard. Austria handled a ball in the box and knocked it over the line for what should have either been a goal or penalty, but the referee didn’t rule either and the Americans were left with nothing.

Van der Vaart was eager to get on the scoresheet, and blazed wide from a far better position shortly afterwards, but the Netherlands was well in control of the game. Disaster appeared to strike later in the half, however, when Colombia put the ball in the net off the foot of Santiago Arias before the goal was controversially chalked out for offside.

Spain were out of the gate quickly but couldn’t quite get their timing right as twice in the opening minutes David Villa put the ball in the back of the net but was correctly ruled offside on both occasions. It actually ended up being South Africa with the first great allowed chance in the 18th minute when Oupa Manyisa’s speculative shot from distance took a massive deflection off a Spain defender. The sudden change of direction by the ball froze Iker Casillas, who watched helplessly as the ball went over his head and hit off the top of the crossbar.
