Bastian Schweinsteiger's problematic ankle simply won't leave him alone. Bayern Munich have announced that the midfielder will have to undergo surgery after medical tests showed increased ossification in the joint, which was leading to unmanageable tendinitis. Initially, Schweinsteiger had tried to play through the injury, but the pain had apparently reached the point where surgery was the only option.

It’s unclear how long the procedure will keep the 29-year-old on the sidelines, but it’s obviously not great news with a key game against Borussia Dortmund coming up after the international break. Bayern will be hoping that Schweinsteiger going under the knife now will clear the problem up for good -- a lingering issue here could well see their quest to retain the European Cup derailed.
Schweinsteiger’s ankle has been troubling him since at least the end of last season, and he missed a significant chunk of preseason after surgery in June.
