Neven Subotic injury: Dortmund defender tears two ligaments in knee

Borussia Dortmund have lost Neven Subotic for the season after he tore two ligaments in his knee.

Neven Subotic is facing six months on the sideline after tearing two ligaments in his knee on Saturday. The central defender went down in Borussia Dortmund’s 2-1 loss to Wolfsburg and was stretchered off the field. The medical staff tested the stability of the knee while he was on the field, fueling speculation that he had torn ligaments in his knee. After the match, both he and the club confirmed the injury.

"Unfortunately have no good news to report about my injury," Subotic said in German on his Facebook page. "It's a torn ligament in 2 places. But do not worry, I'll come back stronger."

The club clarified that he tore two ligaments and would not return this season.

“Neven Subotic is injured for the rest of the season,” a statement read on Dortmund’s official website.

“The central defender tore the posterior cruciate ligament and medial collateral ligament tear in his right knee. According to team doctor Markus Braun, the 25-year-old will be out for at least six months.”

Subotic's injury makes Dortmund's summer purchase of Sokratis Papastathopoulos all the more important. The Greek will take Subotic's place in the center of defense alongside Mats Hummes and hope that he can play well enough to help keep Bayern Munich from pulling too far ahead atop the Bundesliga table.

As unfortunate as Subotic's injury is for him and Dortmund, it will not have an effect on the World Cup because Serbia did not qualify for the tournament. That also means that Subotic will not be tempted to rush back for the World Cup and can ensure he makes a full recover before returning to the pitch.
