Massimiliano Allegri set to leave AC Milan at the end of the season

Massimiliano Allegri has been quoted as saying he’ll leave his position as AC Milan coach at the end of the season.

AC Milan coach Massimiliano Allegri is set to leave his position at the end of the season, after being quoted in an interview with newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport as saying "this is certainly my last Christmas as a Milanista." The rossoneri have struggled for form for the second consecutive season, and and find themselves down in 13th place as the halfway point of the season approaches.

Allegri’s departure has seemed imminent for quite a while, though it now seems he won’t bow out until the summer break. Despite them currently sitting in the bottom half of the table, Allegri added that he wanted to leave the rossoneri in Europe — and hinted that winning the Coppa Italia would be more achievable than managing to fight back to finish third in the league.

The former Cagliari coach has been at the San Siro since 2010, and broke Inter Milan's domination by winning the scudetto in his first season at the club. However he took over at a time of transition, and the subsequent departure and retirement of several of the rossoneri's first teamers have left Milan struggling to find their best since. Even so, Allegri insists that he leaves a team that "with some tweaking will have a future."
