Atletico Madrid's joy from yesterday after reaching the Copa del Rey final were tempered a bit by the news that midfielder Tiago Mendes suffered a broken arm in their semifinal against Sevilla.

Tiago was injured in the first half of Wednesday's match after a challenge from Sevilla midfielder Gary Medel. Tiago underwent test in Madrid that confirmed a broken bone in his right forearm. The club has yet to set a timetable for his possible return.

Tiago will have surgery on the arm which has led some media outlets in Spain to speculate the Portuguese international could be out for two months. Doctors will affix a metal plate on the ulna bone in Tiago’s right arm.

Tiago spoke about the injury on the team’s website about the incident that led to the injury.

“[Medel] was going to clear the ball and I put my arm up to protect my face,” Tiago recalled to the club’s official website. “In the end, I felt something was wrong. I tried to keep playing but I could not continue. The bone was broken and it hurt to move my arm.

“I was feeling pretty good in the team. Injuries never come at a good time and now I have to recover well.”

Atletico Madrid could move within nine points of first place Barcelona if the Blaugrana lose to Real Madrid and Atletico get a win over Malaga this weekend.
