As promised earlier in the week, Lionel Messi has put pen to paper on a contract extension with Barcelona. The new deal with keep the Argentine forward with the Blaugrana through the summer of 2018. No real surprise here as Messi had agreed to the deal back in December but now that everything is official, everyone get re-focus on the important things.
Lionel Messi extends Barcelona contract through 2018
After announcing a deal was agreed to back in December, Lionel Messi today signed his contract extension with Barcelona. The Argentine is now under contract with the club until 2018.

Barcelona announced the contract signing on their website with a brief statement saying that the signing ceremony was attended by the player, team President Sandro Rosell, Vice-President Josep Maria Bartomeu and the Director of Football Andoni Zubizarreta. All sorts of people showed up but when it’s your team’s best player, and probably the best player in the world, you want to make sure he’s happy.
The new contract adds two more years on to Messi’s previous deal with the club that had been set to expire in June 2016. Messi has been with Barcelona since the age of 13 and debuted for the first team three years later. He’s gone on to re-write the record books and become one of the biggest stars in the sport.
Not too shabby.
Messi will be 31-years-old when his contract expires. By then he’ll probably have won the FIFA Ballon d’Or three or four more times and have close to 600 goals. Hopefully by then the final naysayers who think he has to win a World Cup to be given the respect he deserves will have gotten over their pointless stand. Who knows though, he’ll have two cracks at it between now and when his contract is up.
