Borussia Dortmund’s Mats Hummels out four weeks with partially torn ankle ligament

Mats Hummels is expected to miss the next four weeks after partially tearing a ligament in his right ankle.

Schalke weren’t the only side in the Revierderby to lose a player to injury for several weeks following Saturday’s Revierderby. Borussia Dortmund are expected to be without Mats Hummels for up to four weeks after the centerback suffered a partial tear of the outer ligament in his right ankle.

Hummels, 24, was a game time decision for Jürgen Klopp after being out for a little over a week with the flu. Hummels was nowhere close to fully match fit when he stepped on the field, and it appeared as the first half wound down that he picked up an injury. The defender was replaced at halftime by Marco Reus as Klopp went to a three man defense.

Klopp’s decision to bring a not-fully-fit Hummels into the starting eleven after Felipe Santana had been playing well will be questioned thoroughly over the next few weeks. While the Bundesliga has been out of reach for some time, BVB are very much in the hunt for their first Champions League title in sixteen years. The quarterfinals will be played on April 2/3 and April 9/10. It’s tough to see BVB advancing in the Champions League against a tough opponent without their defensive stalwart.
