Tottenham Hotspur vs. Fulham: Final score 0-1; Cottagers stun Spurs at WHL

Dimitar Berbatov grabbed a crucial counterattacking goal to condemn Tottenham Hotspur to a loss -- and give Fulham just their third away win of the season.

Fulham managed a surprise 1-0 win at White Hart Lane against a scuffling Tottenham Hotspur thanks to a second-half strike from Dimitar Berbatov. The hosts, apparently fatigued after a brutal 120 minutes at the San Siro in midweek, put in a poor display, and although the Cottagers weren't much better they did enough to snatch a goal and then defended their lead fairly comfortably.

The first half passed by more or less without incident. Gareth Bale had an early headed cleared off the line by Sascha Riether, but that was the extent of the excitement. Neither Fulham nor Spurs seemed particularly interested in playing football, and the only other event of any significance was Bale going down in a heap off the ball clutching his Achilles tendon. Unsurprisingly, he was fine.

But the second half was a different affair. Within minutes of the restart, the visitors finally showed some attacking intent, with Riether and Ashkan Dejagah breaking at speed down the right following a saved Bale shot. Dimitar Berbetov followed the run in and caressed Riether's cross beyond a stricken Hugo Lloris.

Brede Hangeland should have made it 2-0 when he popped up at the back post on a corner only for the big centre half to power his header the wrong side of the post. Spurs deployed Jermaine Defoe and Clint Dempsey in the hopes of getting a goal, and the former tested Mark Schwarzer with a 70th-minute snapshot and then forced the goalkeeper into a phenomenal save just before full time, but with Bale off-colour the hosts simply couldn't get any traction in the attacking half, leaving them to fall 1-0.

It’s a fine result for Fulham, but Tottenham are suddenly looking in real trouble for the Champions League places.
