CONMEBOL 2014 World Cup qualifying: Chile host Uruguay in the pick of the action

The South American qualification table could hardly be closer, with only Argentina and Colombia looking comfortable. It’s a free-for-all everywhere else.

Julian Finney

It is so exciting FIFA should probably let Brazil host World Cups more often. Their absence has made the South American qualification table crazily unpredictable, and now teams like Uruguay and Chile are in a spot of bother. The only two teams who are almost certain qualifiers are the current top two in the group -- Argentina and the exceptionally exciting Colombia.

Argentina will presumably comfortably see off Bolivia in the early kick-off, even if the trip to La Paz will make it a touch trickier. Paraguay would then move off the bottom if they pick up anything against Ecuador in Quito, though with La Tri currently in third place, that's easier said than done.

The really tasty games are the two later ones, with Chile's game at home to Uruguay the one which could land one of those giants in hot water. Uruguay haven't won a qualification match in their last five attempts, and are currently only just in a qualification spot in fourth. Chile have lost four on the bounce, and are a point further back -- not occupying a qualification place as it stands.

Last but not least is Venezuela -- a team who have upset the odds and are currently in the playoff place -- hosting Colombia. The latter have won four consecutively and look outstanding under José Pekerman, practically guaranteeing their qualification already. But, if Venezuela can cause an upset, they will put themselves in a good position to make the World Cup too.

Schedule (all times ET)

Ecuador vs. Paraguay - 5 p.m.
Chile vs. Uruguay - 7:30 p.m.
