Mexico vs. USA, 2014 World Cup Qualifying: Mexico knocking on the door, US holding it closed

Update: Final Score - Mexico 0-0 USA: Match report.

As the minutes ticked away not much changed. Mexico definitely had the better of the ball but there really wasn't much in terms of creativity from El Tri. That suited the US just fine as every minute that went by moved them closer to getting their first meaningful result in Azteca in decades.

In the 69th minute a scramble in the box created easily the most frightening moment for the United States. Mexico had several good touches but the final shot from Jesus Zavala was deflected by Omar Gonzalez with his hip and out for a corner. Mexico did nothing with the set piece but it was the first time the US defense looked really out of sorts. They settled though and dealt with the danger and that's what you have to do.

Mexico was close again in the 72nd minute but Graham Zusi's insane individual effort prevented what looked like a sure goal. Giovani Dos Santos dribbled close to the US goal along the touchline before finding Angel Reyes completed unmarked at the far post. Before Reyes could take a shot or even get a touch, Zusi came rocketing in from the midfield and knocked the ball away for a corner.

Mexico were denied a fairly clear penalty in the 76th minute when Maurice Edu hammered into Javier Aquino from behind. The referee was right on top of the play and waved away the protest as Mexican players surrounded him.

It’s going to be a nervy final 15 minutes.
