What do you do when you have a terrible team with no sign of getting results and no obvious means of getting better? You sack your manager, of course. That’s exactly what struggling Sunderland have done with Martin O’Neill, who just a year ago was being celebrated as having turned around the club’s fortunes. It’s funny how life works.

Anyway, this is probably the right call -- O'Neill's Sunderland side have showed little sign of life this year and their form's gone from poor to worse, epitomised by a pathetic display on Saturday that saw them roll over without complaint against a weakened Manchester United team. If any side needed a kick in the pants, it's Sunderland.

Unfortunately for the Black Cats, it doesn't seem likely that this will be enough. Ace centre forward Steven Fletcher's out for the season and despite bringing in Danny Graham in the January transfer window they don't seem to know how to score goals without him. With Wigan Athletic and Aston Villa both turning around their fortunes as of late, Sunderland are in the thick of the relegation battle. Sacking the manager may not be enough to turn things around.
