Chivas Guadalajara and Club America are both well-positioned to qualifying for Liguilla despite the result of Sunday’s Super Clasico, but things are a bit more desperate for Chivas, who currently sit outside of Mexico’s top eight. They haven’t lost since the second match of the season, away to Santos Laguna, but they’ve drawn more than they’ve won and have less than half as many goals in Liga MX as America do.

Between Club America’s recent slip-ups and Chivas Guadalajara’s treading of water, Sunday’s Super Clasico could be big for both teams’ Liguilla chances, though it’s certainly bigger for the hosts.

While America are comfortably in fourth place in the league, they’ve fallen off a tad bit recently, drawing their last two matches, 1-1. They have one of the league’s leading goal-scorers in Cristian Benitez, but he hasn’t received much help from his attacking mates recently, and his defense has given up goals at bad times over the last two games. Morelia’s goal came in the first minute of their draw with America, and San Luis’s draw last week was gifted to them by a 91st minute penalty.
Surprisingly, despite the incredible partisan crowds that show up for Super Clasico matches, the road team has won the last three consecutive games between these two sides in Liga MX. In last season’s edition of the rivalry, Chivas turned their season around with a win at Estadio Azteca that helped them secure a Liguilla playoff spot.

Diego Reyes is a massive loss for America, but they have depth at the back. Hector Reynoso will play in the Super Clasico as long as he’s able to stand on two legs. Patricio Araujo was not a lock to start if he was available and will not be too big of a loss.
