Manchester United vs. Real Madrid: Nani shown a controversial red card

Update: Manchester United 1-2 Real Madrid, final. Madrid progress to Champions League quarterfinals.

After neither side could break through in the first half, it only took three minutes for a goal to finally come in the second half. Sergio Ramos accidentally poked a Nani cross past Diego Lopez, putting United up 1-0 and forcing Real Madrid to be even more aggressive with their attack.

Madrid’s possession increased after the goal but the match was changed in the 59th minute when the referee sent off Nani after he went for a high ball and cleated Álvaro Arbeloa in the side of the chest. That might sound bad but it didn’t seem like a malicious foul when it happened and even the Madrid players weren’t petitioning the referee for a call.

As Nani got back to his feet, the referee made his decision showing him a red card and leaving United to defense their lead with 10-men.

It’s definitely a match changing moment and if Madrid come back to win this tie, it’ll be a heated talking point for a long time to come. Jose Mourinho made a quick adjustment after the card removing Arbeloa and replacing him with Luka Modric to help crank up the pressure on United.
