Bayern Munich vs. Fortuna Düsseldorf: Final score 3-2, Bavarians fight back late

While Fortuna Düsseldorf led twice at the Allianz Arena, Bayern Munich’s win is probably very much deserved.

Alexander Hassenstein

Bayern Munich were stunned on multiple occasions on Saturday, both by Fortuna Düsseldorf's attack and their goalkeeper Fabian Giefer, but their quality came through in the closing minutes of a 3-2 victory. The result was harsh on the visitors, who did very well to take the lead twice, but Bayern were too good for them at the end.

Mathis Bolly took advantage of some terrible Bayern defending on 16 minutes, scoring the opening goal. It was a simple goal, started with a cross into the head of Andreas Lambertz. Bayern’s defense was caught ball-watching as he nodded down for Bolly, who had an easy finish.

Mario Mandžukić was denied in the 27th minute by Giefer, who made an absolutely brilliant close-range reaction save to keep his team ahead. Düsseldorf dodged another bullet in the 40th minute when Daniel van Buyten had a header blocked off the line, but they couldn't hold onto their lead until the break. Thomas Müller equalized just before the halftime whistle, directing a cross from Philipp Lahm into the net.

Bayern were unsurprisingly on top throughout the second half until Düsseldorf shocked them by going up ahead again, scoring in somewhat similar fashion. Again, a header set up the goal, with Oliver Fink providing an assist for Lambertz, who finished well past Manuel Neuer. Sadly for the visitors, their lead lasted less than three minutes. Franck Ribery equalized quickly, assisted by Claudio Pizarro.

Düsseldorf's hearts were finally broken for good in the 86th minute, on a corner. Jerome Boateng was the hero for Bayern, nodding in a ball from Lahm after a corner to snatch three points for his team.
