Real Madrid favourites for Dortmund clash

Stuart FranklinIt took two stoppage time goals for Borussia Dortmund to beat a stubborn Málaga, and by coach Jürgen Klopp’s own admission, they need to improve if they are to have any chance of reaching the final. Meanwhile, Real Madrid saw off Galatasaray in the quarters, but only after letting the Turkish side back into the game needlessly, conceding three times in 20 minutes.
Despite letting their concentration wane against Gala, Real Madrid are still the stronger of the two sides here, and will be expected to progress to the final. However, they will have to be wary of last season’s Bundesliga champions, who weren’t helped defensively against Málaga with the absence of their star centre-back Mats Hummels.

As worst options go, it’s not a bad one. The problem here is that these two ties don’t give much of a contrast of styles, so all else being equal, the best team is likely to prevail. For Real Madrid vs. Bayern Munich, that’s quite hard to judge, and could make for a real clash of the titans, but for Barcelona vs. Dortmund, it’s not looking good for the Germans.

Harold CunninghamAny of the three possible draws is an intriguing match-up, although we could see yet another two El Clasicos, and if the countries are kept apart it will give Dortmund and Real Madrid a chance for revenge at the disappointing non-challenges their league campaigns turned out to be. Whatever the draw, we should be guaranteed four great games, with the winner impossible to predict and the race too close to call.
