Bayern Munich vs. VfL Wolfsburg: Final score 6-1, Bayern romp keeps treble dreams alive

Mario Gomez came off the bench to score a hat trick, but by then Bayern was already well on their way to the DFB Pokal final, and maybe the treble too.

Bayern Munich's treble dreams are alive and well after crushing VfL Wolfsburg 6-1 in their DFB Pokal semifinal. Mario Mandzukic scored to get Bayern going before Arjen Robben and Xherdan Shaqiri each added goals. Mario Gomez just rubbed it in Wolfsburg's face when he came off the bench to score three goals in seven minutes and send Bayern to the final in style.

Shaqiri was absolutely brilliant all match and it was his ball who opened up play for Bayern’s first goal. His ball released Robben down the right, who ran onto it and crossed for Mandzukic, who smashed the ball home from close range to put Bayern in front after 17 minutes.

Robben added to the Bayern lead before the break when Shaqiri’s brilliant ball put him in alone on goal. From there it was a simple finish and the Allianz Arena was rocking.

Wolfsburg weren't bad in the first half, but they were outclassed by a superior Bayern side. It would take something amazing to get a goal and just before the break, that's just what they got. Diego hit a gorgeous shot in the 45th minute to beat Manuel Neuer and Wolfsburg went into halftime with hope.

Bayern would make sure that hope didn’t last long, though. Five minutes after halftime, Shaqiri put a feather in his wonderful match by getting on the scoresheet himself and Bayern were 3-1 up. Wolfsburg weren’t overturning that deficit and the match was all but settled at that point.

But somebody forgot to tell Gomez that the match was in the bag for Bayern at that point. He came in after 77 minutes and by the 80th minute had already scored. He added another three minutes later, then one more in the 86th minute to make it a hat trick for him and a 6-1 shellacking for the home side.

Bayern are now into the final of the DFB Pokal, where they will play the winner of the other semifinal between VfB Stuttgart and Freiburg. They are also in the semifinals of the UEFA Champions League, which along with the Pokal and the Bundesliga title they have already clinched, has Bayern thinking treble.
