Lionel Messi injury: Barcelona star to undergo tests on Wednesday

Lionel Messi will undergo tests on his injured right hamstring on Wednesday.

Barcelona will not know the severity of Lionel Messi's right hamstring injury until Wednesday. The superstar left Tuesday's UEFA Champions League match at halftime after being injured in the first half and will not undergo tests until Wednesday, when the club hopes to have an idea of how badly he is hurt and how long he will be out for.

It was unclear exactly when Messi was injured. He scored the opening goal of the quarterfinal first leg at Paris Saint-Germain in the 38th minute, but sometime between then and halftime he felt something go wrong in his right hamstring. He walked gingerly and rubbed it for a bit, even going off the pitch, but he came back on moments later. It looked as if he would try to play through the injury, but after finishing the first half he did not come out for the second half as Tito Vilanova opted to put Cesc Fabregas on instead of risking his superstar.

That Messi felt he could try to play through the injury for the remainder of the first half could be a sign that the injury is not severe and at worst he would only miss a couple weeks, but that would just be speculation. And so we wait for Wednesday’s tests.
