Borussia Mönchengladbach vs. Augsburg: Final score 1-0, First half penalty the difference

Borussia Mönchengladbach moved back into contention for the Europa League with a 1-0 win over Augsburg.

Borussia Mönchengladbach used a first half penalty to edge Augsburg 1-0 on Friday evening and strengthen their place in the race for the Europa League.

Both sides needed points, so they came out with multiple goals in their eyes. After a testy start to the match, Kevin Vogt saw red. The defender was sent off for pulling Peniel Mlapa down by his shirt. Oh yeah, he also conceded a penalty on the foul. Filip Daems stepped up and converted the penalty to make it 1-0 in the 26th minute.

Augsburg continue to throw numbers forward even down a man, but it only allowed Gladbach to sit back and counter-attack. Patrick Herrmann and Juan Arango came close, but they were unable to add a second. They managed to hold on to win.

Gladbach move into 6th place with 44 points, putting pressure on the other clubs around them for the remainder of the weekend. Their remaining schedule features two tough home matchups against Bayern Munich and Schalke.

Augsburg find themselves still facing the relegation playoff spot and sitting in 16th place after the loss. They’ll be keeping a close eye on the games involving Fortuna Düsseldorf and Hoffenheim and hoping that the two sides falter this weekend.
