Real Madrid’s odds are slim but there is a path to victory

The chances of Real Madrid advancing to the Champions League Final do not look good after their first leg loss against Borussia Dortmund. There is a sliver of hope for Madrid though and if any team can find a way back, it might be them.

There's no doubt that Real Madrid have a hell of an uphill climb ahead of them today against Borussia Dortmund. Down 4-1 after the first leg in Germany, Jose Mourinho's team is very much on the precipice of a disappointing exit for a competition many pegged them to win. There's also no doubt that Madrid are more than capable of winning a game 3-0 at home, even against a solid team like Dortmund.

That’s basically what Madrid have to do. Shutout the Germans and score at least three goals. Simple!

Our Real Madrid blog Managing Madrid has been dealing with the fallout from last week’s shocking loss and fully realize that while their beloved Los Merengues can pull this off, they have to be better all over the field. There is a path to victory here for Madrid and between the talent on the pitch and the man on the touchline, anything is possible.

It will be important for Real Madrid to recover the ball properly in the midfield to prevent Reus, Götze and Lewandowski from having good chances off counterattacks. Ramos’ presence in the team’s center back position will be valuable for Jose Mourinho, as Real’s number 4 tries to anticipate and go for the steal in multiple occasions. Essien will likely be the team’s right back after coming back from his injury, and that’s another improvement. The African player lacks the speed but he is a very talented player when it all comes down to make tactical decisions. And his good crossed could be useful.

Will the adjustments be enough for Madrid? Can they be effective going forward without exposing themselves at the back to Dortmund’s clearly lethal attack?

All your questions will be answered today at the Bernabéu.
