MLS 2013, Week 6 preview and fixtures: Are you a true fan?

Here comes MLS, April edition.

George Frey

We made it, folks. The first month of the MLS season is in the books and the early season excitement is behind us. But if you are still a true MLS fan, someone who truly loves the league and its clubs, you are still excited. Are you a true fan?

True fan debates are the real measure of whether a league is “for real.”

Sporting Kansas City vs. D.C. United

Friday, 8:30 p.m. ET - MLS Live

Are you ready for some football? Some Friday night football? Why do I get the feeling that Hank Williams Jr. wouldn’t fit in so well with the MLS crowd?

Pick: Draw, 1-1.

Toronto FC vs. FC Dallas

Saturday, 4 p.m. ET - MLS Live

Dallas are joint top of MLS, but their wins are over Colorado, Houston, a Salt Lake team that was decimated by World Cup qualifiers and New England. So how good are Dallas? Toronto probably won’t tell us.

Pick: Dallas, 2-0.

Columbus Crew vs. Philadelphia Union

Saturday, 5 p.m. ET - UniMas

Federico Higuain, Sebastien Le Toux, Jairo Arrieta, Jack McInerney. This match has its fair share of entertaining, fun players. Oh, and Conor Casey.

Colorado Rapids vs. Real Salt Lake

Saturday, 7:30 p.m. ET - NBC Sports Network

Two Rocky Mountain Cups in three weeks? How did we get to be so...lucky?

Pick: Salt Lake, 2-1.

San Jose Earthquakes vs. Vancouver Whitecaps

Saturday, 10:30 p.m. ET - MLS Live

Both of these teams have been very good at times and very bad at others. The difference is the Whitecaps have been at full strength. The Quakes have been a MASH unit.

Pick: San Jose, 1-0.

Portland Timbers vs. Houston Dynamo

Saturday, 10:30 p.m. ET - MLS Live

The Dynamo are the pragmatic, organized, mature, boring team led by the stalwart Dominic Kinnear. The Timbers are the young, energetic, attack-minded, dynamic team led by the inspiring Caleb Porter. Guess which team has scored more goals this season? The Dynamo.

Pick: Houston, 3-1.

Chicago Fire vs. New York Red Bulls

Sunday, 5 p.m. ET - ESPN2

At least one of these teams has made the playoffs in every season since Chicago came into the league in 1998, but at this absurdly early point in the season, neither is in a top five place in the East. Insights like this are why it is important to carefully track the standings in April.
