Hoffenheim dismissed their manager and sporting director this week, but managed to find a new lease on life in the relegation battle with a 3-0 victory over Fortuna Düsseldorf. Hoffenheim are now one point behind Augsburg for the relegation playoff place, but Augsburg have a game in hand against Borussia Dortmund tomorrow. Düsseldorf are now only six points ahead of Hoffenheim.
Hoffenheim vs. Fortuna Düsseldorf: Final score 3-0, Hoffenheim show signs of life in relegation battle
Markus Gisdol’s first match in charge of Hoffenheim was a successful 3-0 victory over Fortuna Düsseldorf.
New manager Markus Gisdol had his work cut out for him from the start. Hoffenheim had only won two matches since the new year and were coming off of a crushing 3-0 loss to Schalke. Gisdol made a few changes to the starting eleven, and the team as a whole showed more energy and fight than they had in weeks.
Of their six remaining games this season, Hoffenheim are likely looking at two matches where they can expect to lose: away to Bayer Leverkusen and away to Borussia Dortmund. Wolfsburg, Nürnberg, Werder Bremen, and Hamburg are all winnable games.
Augsburg and Düsseldorf have more difficult schedules for the final run-in. In fact, five of Augsburg’s final seven matches are against teams currently in the top eight. Düsseldorf’s final six matches feature BVB and Eintracht Frankfurt with four winnable matches.
