Álvaro Negredo’s second goal of the match in the 87th minute gave Sevilla a 2-1 victory over Atheltic Bilbao today at the Estadio Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán.

Sevilla move up to 10th position, six points behind a European spot.

Carlos Gurpegi’s foul on Negredo on the left wing set-up an early set piece for the home side that they did not waste. Ivan Rakitic fired the ball into the Atheltic area, finding Negredo six yards from goal which he sent past Gorka Iraizoz to stake Sevilla to a 1-0 lead in the 4th minute.

Jose Antonio Reyes nearly doubled the lead in the 12th minute, but missed the target on a short range shot.

Sevilla controlled the match into the second half but were made to pay, at least for the moment, for wasting their chances. In the 55th minute Gurpegi went from zero to hero, heading home a free kick from Ibai Gomez to tie the match at a goal apiece.

Atheltic looked good for at least the point in the 73rd minute when Sevilla's Fernando Navarro was shown a second yellow card and sent off. The advantage only lasted seven minutes though after Aymeric Laporte was booked twice in a three minutes span and evened the sides at 10 men each.

With only three minutes left to play, Negredo rescued the full three points for Sevilla, blasting a Reyes’ cross into the goal from short range to give the home side a 2-1 victory.
