Barcelona need to do three things if they have any hope of a comeback

Barcelona have a nearly impossible challenge ahead of them today against Bayern Munich if they hope to overturn the 4-0 loss in the first leg. If they want to pull off the miraculous recovery, they’ll need to do three things right.

Barcelona have an even steeper hill to climb than their rivals Real Madrid did yesterday against Borussia Dortmund. Madrid couldn't pull off the comeback, though they came close with a late surge, so what chance do Barcelona have of overcoming a four goal deficit against the formidable Bayern Munich?

The honest answer is probably not much but as we’ve seen over the years anything is possible in the Champions League, so even a struggling and wounded team like Barcelona are still dangerous. It’s like the cornered animal you always hear about that will doing anything to save itself and escape. At moments like this Barca could be more dangerous than ever...then again they could get hammered today.

If Barcelona are to pull off the unthinkable against Bayern, our Barcelona blog Barca Blaugranes has laid out the three things that they must do in order to have any chance. One of those requirements is that Lionel Messi's teammates provide support to the striker as he will not be able to do this alone today.

Yes, if Barcelona are going to progress, they will probably do so after some magic from Lionel Messi, but that doesn't mean that we should get the ball to our Argentine striker at every opportunity. Instead, Messi needs support from his teammates - whether that means that Xavi needs to take over the midfield, or whether that means that Pedro and/or David Villa need to establish themselves as a credible scoring threat, then so be it. The point is that Messi cannot do it alone.

As for the other two keys to a comeback, you’ll have to check out Barca Blaugranes but it’s definitely worth your time.

For now there’s nothing more to do but wait and see what happens when Barca and Bayern kick-off at the Camp Nou in a couple hours.
