La Liga Sunday: Valencia and Betis improve their European hopes

Real Betis and Valencia both got solid wins as they chase European spots while Celta Vigo joins Mallorca in serious jeopardy of being relegation at the end of the month.

Valencia kept pressure on Real Sociedad with their big win over Rayo Vallecano. Real Betis improved their European chances at Celta Vigo's expense while Malaga and Sevilla played to a drab scoreless draw. Here's a recap of all the action today in Spain.

Rayo Vallecano 0-4 Valencia

Los Che temporarily took over fourth place thanks to a 4-0 thumping of Rayo Vallecano. While Real Sociedad could retake the final Champions League spot with a win tomorrow, Valencia have at least put them under heavy pressure.

Roberto Soldado did te damage in the firt half netting a brace and putting Valencia comfortably ahead at the break. Andres Guardado and Nelson Valdez finished things off in the second half.

Rayo failed to keep pace with Betis for the final Europa League spot, falling six points back.

Real Betis 1-0 Celta Vigo

Rubén Castro's 67th minute strike not only gave Betis the victory, it also put them a step closer to claiming a Europa League spot for next season. The win ended Betis' four game skid while Celta have now suffered two straight losses and have dropped three points behind Real Zaragoza in the final safe spot in the table.

Atletico Madrid vs. Barcelona

Malaga vs. Sevilla

Despite both sides needing full points, neither Malaga or Sevilla could break through and played to a drab scoreless draw. It wasn’t an undeserved result for either side as the two teams were evenly matches and basically nullified one another.

Malaga failed to keep pace with Betis and Real in the race for fourth place while Sevilla hopes of catching Betis look slim as they drop five points behind their rivals for the final Europa League place.
