Freiburg sign manager Christian Streich to contract extension

After a stellar season, Freiburg have signed manager Christian Streich to a contract extension.

Christian Streich and Freiburg have agreed to a contract extension that will keep the manager at the club for... the foreseeable future. I have to say “the foreseeable future”, because Freiburg refused to release how many years this extension is. It could be one. It could be ten.

Streich, 47, took over Freiburg during last season’s winter break. They were dead last in the table and surefire candidates to be relegated at the end of the season. The team fought back under their fiery manager and climbed all the way to twelfth in the table. The even put together a ten match unbeaten run which was the longest in club history.

Fritz Keller, chairman of the Freiburg board, said “With Christian Streich and his coaching staff, the ink is now dry on the club’s most important acquisitions. We are all looking forward to following this club’s path to success together.”

This season has been nothing short of spectacular for Freiburg. Barring an absolute catastrophe on Saturday, they will finish no lower than sixth in the table with a spot in Europe. A win over Schalke on Saturday at Mage Solar Stadion, something they accomplished in Gelsenkirchen back in December, will see the in next season’s Champions League. This wasn’t possible before the season started.

Yes, they have already agreed to sell a few of their players this summer, and it’s highly possible that a couple others will follow them out the door. Streich will have his work cut out for him this summer in order to build a squad that can compete in both the Bundesliga and Europe next season.
