Schalke gives manager Jens Keller two year contract

While there were many ups-and-downs this season for Schalke under Jens Keller, the club has seen fit to give the manager a contract through June 2015.

After a couple of months without committing either way, Schalke have finally decided that manager Jens Keller deserves the gig full time. He has been given a contract that will run through June 2015.

Keller, 42, was promoted to first team coach from the youth ranks after the Schalke board dismissed manager Huub Stevens after a stunning run of awful results. The club fell to tenth place on Matchday 21 after a 0-4 defeat to Bayern Munich. With one match remaining in the season, Schalke are in fourth place, and a point will put them in next season’s Champions League.

“We’re convinced by the work he’s doing because we can see the progress made by the team in recent months despite all the injury problems,” said sporting director Horst Heldt. “Jens is pursuing a coherent concept that has won the support not only of the players but also of the decision-makers inside the club.”

Schalke have been hit with a lot of injuries this season, and the sale of Lewis Holtby in January didn’t help their campaign. Still, they made the Round of 16 of the Champions League and are currently on pace to make next season’s tournament. It remains to be seen if Keller can get them up to competing with Bayern and Borussia Dortmund in competing for the title.
