Chivas USA acquires Gabriel Farfan from Philadelphia Union

Gabriel Farfan is heading to Los Angeles after Chivas USA gave up a first round pick and allocation money to acquire him.

USA TODAY Sports

Chivas USA traded for Gabriel Farfan on Tuesday, sending a first round pick and allocation money to the Philadelphia Union to acquire the 24-year-old.

The acquisition of Farfan is another curious move by the Goats. Farfan had somewhat fallen out of favor in Philadelphia and while most believe he is a useful player, Chivas gave up a lot to get him. Even if the Goats didn’t give the Union a lot of allocation, the first round pick is especially valuable with Chivas struggling and it looking like it could be a very high pick.

Chivas head coach Chelis has long been a fan of Farfan and his brother Michael so it is no surprise that the Goats made an aggressive move to acquire Gabriel. The Union weren’t actively shopping Farfan, but they got a big haul in return for a player who was no longer even starting regularly for them,

Farfan is naturally a midfielder, but was used mostly at left back in Philadelphia. he should be able to move back to the midfield with Chivas, which may be able to spark the career of the former United States U-17 player.
