After 90 minutes, two goals, numerous shots off the post and Jose Mourinho being sent off by the referee, we're heading to extra Bernebaú and at least an additional 30 minutes and possibly penalty kicks.
Real Madrid vs. Atletico Madrid: We’re heading to extra time at the Santiago Bernabéu
Cristiano Ronaldo put Real Madrid in the lead in the 14th minute with a powerful header off a corner kick that eluded Atletico keeper Thibaut Courtois. Los Colchoneros answered back ten minutes from halftime when Radamel Falcao did a magical job holding up the ball in the midfield and fighting off several tackles before finding Diego Costa slicing through the Madrid defense. Costa collected the pass from Falcao and beat Diego Lopez with a shot just off the keeper's fingertips.
Madrid were denied a potential winner twice in the second half when Cristiano Ronaldo hit the post on a shot from open play and a free kick. Atletico defender Juanfran also cleared a shot from Mesut Özil off the line.
We will now head to extra time and play an additional 30 minutes of soccer, broken into two 15 minutes halves. There is no golden goal rule in extra time, so no matter how many goals are scored, the two teams will complete the full time.
If the match remains tied after extra time, the Copa del Rey champions will be determined by the always stressful and dramatic penalty kicks.
Just a reminder, Atletico Madrid haven’t defeated their rivals Real Madrid in 25 matches, a run that goes back to 1999 when Atletico defeated Madrid 3-1 at the Bernabéu.
Buckle up everyone, this should be fun.
