FC Kansas City vs Boston Breakers: Preview

FC Kansas City suffered their first loss last week and Boston ended their two game winning streak to produce a draw against Washington.

FC Kansas City and the Boster Breakers square up in a serendipitous match-up between two teams that both saw winning streaks broken up last week. On Saturday an unrecognizable Kansas City squad played against the Western New York Flash, deploying their typical lineup (minus Casey Loyd), but with their chemistry missing. Becky Sauerbrunn, a usually meticulous defender was suddenly producing flimsy blocks and miscued headers, and she wasn’t the only one who didn’t turn up in the loss.

Boston didn’t do so well themselves in a draw against the Spirit, although they weren’t as miserable as FCKC. For the Breakers to walk away with a victory they must rely on the speed of Heather O’Reilly. So far this year she’s yet to meet a defender that can close her down without conceding a foul. O’Reilly is a ball of energy steamrolling through defenders and exhausting goalkeepers. She will be marked by two FCKC players at any given time because if she is provided with any free space she can cause havoc.

Kansas City should also pay close attention to Lianne Sanderson. She’s the Breaker that finds the pockets of space from which to spray passes forward to Sydney Leroux and O’Reilly. In four appearances for Boston she has been credited with three assists; if FCKC wants to keep a clean sheet they must shut her down.
