Sassuolo and Hellas Verona promoted to Serie A, playoffs to come

It was a typically crazy final day in Serie B, with Sassuolo and Hellas Verona promoted to Serie A. Livorno, Empoli, Novara and Brescia will contest the playoffs.

Sassuolo are promoted to as champions, leaving it until the last game of the season after throwing three previous opportunities of sealing promotion. Their 1-0 win against Livorno was good enough to see them up, after a crazy match which saw them reduced to nine men, and the amaranto ten. With Livorno throwing men forward in the final seconds, a quick counter-attack allowed Simone Missiroli to sneak in and grab a winner.

Despite failing to win in their last three matches before today, Sassuolo’s promotion is fully deserved for one of the smallest teams in the division. Having played a season of attractive, offensive football, they are rewarded with their first ever taste of Serie A. As for Livorno, their draw means they finish third, and are made to settle for a place in the playoffs.

Promoted along with Sassuolo are Hellas Verona -- contrastingly one of the biggest clubs in Serie B. They impressively managed to win the scudetto back in 1985, though their history has been chequered since. They were relegated back in 2002, with this their long-awaited return to the top flight. They sealed promotion with a goalless draw against Empoli, who finish fourth in the table, and will contest the playoffs.

Novara could only draw 1-1 against Virtus Lanciano, though their position in the playoffs is guaranteed. Meanwhile, there was drama at the Mario Rigamonti, as Brescia won 2-0 against Varese. They've leapfrogged the leopardi into sixth place, and the final playoff spot.
